The Questions Every Coffee Franchise Candidate Should Be Asking, But Often Doesn’t

|

Tori Bermond shares key questions prospective coffee franchise franchisees should ask before investing.

When most people begin exploring a coffee franchise opportunity, their first questions are usually about investment costs, financial requirements, and timelines. Those conversations do matter, but they don’t uncover answers you can’t find elsewhere.

After years of working with franchise candidates, I've found that the most productive conversations often come from questions that go beyond the numbers. They help candidates better understand the opportunity, evaluate whether a brand is the right fit, and gain a clearer picture of what franchise ownership will actually look like.

Here are the questions I wish more candidates would ask during the franchise development process.

What Does a Successful Franchisee-Franchisor Partnership Look Like?

One of the most overlooked questions is also one of the most important.

When you're evaluating a franchise opportunity, you're entering into a long-term business relationship. Understanding what that partnership looks like can tell you far more than a brochure or presentation ever could.

At PJ's Coffee, we believe successful partnerships are built on transparency, trust, and open communication. Both sides share a commitment to the brand, work collaboratively to solve challenges, and remain aligned on long-term goals.

The franchise development process should be a two-way conversation. While you're evaluating the opportunity, the franchisor should also be making sure the relationship is the right fit. When both sides are aligned from the beginning, it creates a stronger foundation for long-term success.

What Does Support Look Like After Opening Day?

In my experience, ongoing support is one of the biggest factors in long-term success. That's why I always encourage candidates to understand who they'll be working with once their business is operating.

During their first year, PJ's Coffee franchisees work closely with a dedicated Franchise Business Consultant and Marketing Manager who help support everything from grand opening execution to day-to-day operational questions. As franchisees gain experience, they transition to a long-term Franchise Business Consultant who continues providing operational and technology support.

What Traits Do Your Most Successful Franchisees Have in Common?

I love when candidates ask this question because it shifts the focus away from the brand and toward what truly drives success.

Many people assume successful franchisees have extensive restaurant experience, but that's often not the case. The franchisees who consistently perform well tend to be highly engaged in their businesses and active within their communities.

They prioritize site selection, invest in developing strong teams, and take advantage of the resources available to them. Most importantly, they understand that franchise ownership is a partnership and remain committed to learning and growing alongside the brand.

What Franchise Opportunities Exist Beyond My First Location?

Even if you're only thinking about one location today, it's worth understanding what growth opportunities could be available in the future.

Asking about scalability provides insight into how a franchisor supports long-term development and whether the system is built to grow with its franchisees.

At PJ's Coffee, we offer multi-unit opportunities and development incentives for franchisees who are interested in expanding their footprint over time. While not every owner chooses to grow beyond a single location, it's important to know those opportunities exist if your goals for franchise ownership evolve.

How Does the Brand Adapt as Markets and Consumer Trends Change?

When evaluating a coffee franchise, I encourage candidates to ask how the brand stays relevant and responds to changing market trends. The answer can reveal a lot about the organization's long-term vision.

At PJ's Coffee, we're constantly evaluating guest preferences and beverage trends. This commitment recently led to a comprehensive menu refresh, along with innovations like our energy drink lineup and seasonal limited-time offerings. These updates are thoughtful enhancements that keep the brand relevant while staying true to our New Orleans roots.

For our franchisees, that means investing in a brand that's committed to continuous improvement and long-term growth.

Asking Better Questions Leads to Better Decisions

The best franchise decisions aren't made based solely on investment numbers. They're made by understanding the support you'll receive, the opportunities available for growth, the qualities that drive success, and the type of partnership you're entering.

In my experience, the candidates who ask thoughtful questions are often the ones who enter franchise ownership with the clearest expectations and strongest foundation for long-term success.

If you're exploring coffee franchise opportunities, don't be afraid to go beyond the standard questions. The answers may tell you more about your future success than any financial document ever could.
